HELP

Thank you for reading our help section.

We put a lot of effort into making sure that our customers have all the information that they need to specify their booklet or brochure. If there is anything we've missed, or the explanation is not clear enough, please contact the Help Desk and we'll try to correct this. We are happy to send out printed samples so that you can see the different types of paper and the quality of the printing. Follow the link on the menu to order some free of charge.

1 What size is your booklet?

This page is specifically for CD case sized booklets. You can choose many other sizes by overriding the default values, or you can use the site navigation to browse other pages. Some of the other sizes that you can choose are:-

— A6 (148x105mm), portrait orientation
— A5 (210x148mm), portrait orientation
— A5 (148x210mm), landscape orientation
— A4 (297z210mm), portrait orientation
— DVD case size (180x120mm), portrait orientation.

What do the terms portrait and landscape orientation mean?
Portrait means that the width is less than the height, landscape means that the width is greater than the height. Think of paintings on a wall, landscape paintings tend to be wider than they are tall, portraits tend to be narrower than they are tall.

2 How do you want the cover printed?

Imagine you have taken the staples out of the booklet; you can see that the cover is one sheet of paper or card, folded in the middle. One side of the sheet is the outside of the front and rear cover - this can be printed full colour, or B&W (Black & White). The other side side of the sheet is the inside of the front and rear cover - this can be printed full colour, or B&W, or left blank. For the purposes of this calculator, the cover counts as 4PP ("Printed Pages")- whether or not the inside is left blank. See the note below for more information on what "PP" means.

3 What paper would you like for the cover?

—All paper is high quality and on paper manufactured from responsibly managed and sustainable sources.
—We pre-crease all covers of 170gsm or heavier to ensure a perfect finish.

Gloss paper is our most popular option, it has a semi-gloss coating.
Silk paper has a semi-matt coating, very popular where you want minimal surface shine.
Matt paper is a flat matt uncoated paper with a very smooth bright white finish.

All papers can be written on with a ball point pen. Coated papers are not recommended for writing on with a fountain pen, select matt uncoated paper if this is an issue.

We realise that there are a lot of options here as our advanced press technology means that you get exactly what you want. However, it can be a little confusing if you are new to printing, so here are a few suggestions:-

—If you want a cover that is heavier than the inner pages then we recommend that you select a minimum of 200gsm.
—A self cover booklet or brochure is one where the cover is on the same paper stock as the inner pages. These are very popular for newsletters, comics, and brochures or catalogs that are designed for short term use, i.e. for an event or promotion.
—We recommend that you don't specify covers of a lighter weight than the inners, but you can if you need to.
—130gsm is a good standard weight for self-cover booklets or brochures, 170gsm is a "heavy paper" weight and is often specified for the inner pages of items that are designed to be kept and re-used, for example books or guides that are to be sold or kept as souvenirs.
—Lighter weight papers are still very good quality and are useful where you want to keep the weight down, or where higher pagination (thicker books) is required
—As well giving you a higher quality appearance, having heavyweight covers gives a booklet or brochure greater durability. You should also consider lamination as this enhances the appearance and adds a great deal of durability

We hope these suggestions help, but please remember that you can order a free sample pack that shows you the quality of the printing as well as the different paper types and weights. Just follow the link in the menu to your left.

4 Do you want the cover laminated?

This option specifies a one side laminate, i.e. applied to the outside of the cover. We offer a high gloss laminate or a flat matt. Both enhance the appearance and increase the durability of the booklet or brochure. We can offer you this service at such great prices as we have our own lamination production line and it is specially designed to produce a high quality finish on digitally printed sheets.

5 How do you want the inner pages printed?

You have two options:-

full colour throughout
black & white throughout

if your booklet has lots of pages and only a few are colour, then it may be worth getting a custom price. Bear in mind that any colour at all counts as colour!

6 What paper would you like for the inner pages?

—All paper is high quality and on paper manufactured from responsibly managed and sustainable sources.

Please read the suggestions in the "cover" section above for more information and don't hesitate to call or email us if you need more information. Please remember that you can order a free sample pack that shows you the quality of the printing as well as the different paper types and weights. Just follow the link in the menu to your left.

7 How many pages including the cover?

PP refers to "Printed Page", so an 8PP A5 is eight printed sides of A5, i.e. 2 sheets of A4 printed both sides, stitched (read "stapled", only print finishers would know or care about the difference) in the middle, folded and trimmed. See also the "how many pages can we produce?" section below for more information.

8 What quantity digital booklets can I order?

Any that you like, choose exactly what you need. Bear in mind that over around 300-500, it usually becomes more economical to order litho printed booklets (just use the menu on your left to go to this section).

9 How fast do you need them?

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY.

—Standard service is 4 working days to print from approval of artwork.
—You can upgrade this to 2 working days if you need them faster.
—We then send your order on a next working day courier, this is not a guaranteed service.
—Working days are Monday to Friday excluding bank (national) holidays.
—If you do not have a credit account with us, we will not schedule your job until payment has been made.
—We can upgrade the delivery service to guaranteed next working day service or a Saturday delivery at an extra charge, please call us to arrange this.
—Collection from our factory is available by prior arrangement only.

To be crystal clear:

—All service times are working days until your print job is complete, don't forget to add time in transit to your planning.
—Don't approve your artwork at 5:29pm and expect that day to count as one of the "working days to print". As long as you approve your artwork by 11am then that day will count as one of the working days, otherwise it does not.

The golden "common sense" rule is this: if your print absolutely has to be with you on a certain date, then tell us!

10 What proofing do you need?

Your first soft proof is free of charge with your order. The soft proof is a PDF viewable through your admin area of the web site. The soft proof has had a full pre-flight check carried out and a number of automatic corrections may also have been made. It is very important that you review your soft proof and the pre-flight information that we send to you carefully, even if you originally submitted a PDF. If you find that you need to make alterations and resubmit your artwork, we charge £5 for each additional soft proof.

What is a pre-flight? This is a technical term that means a series of checks have been made to the electronic file that you submit. As an example, your file will be checked to make sure that all of the images in the file have a resolution that is suitable for print.

You can also select a hard copy proof. This is very high quality digital proof printed on the actual press type that your job will be printed on and using the same paper that you specify, so the colour accuracy will be very high.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:-

— If colour is highly critical to you, or you are not sure about the (paper) stock you wish to use, then we recommend that you select a hard copy proof.
— This is a finished proof EXCLUDING LAMINATION on the actual paper you select.
— If you require flat sheets, rather than a finished proof, please let us know, otherwise you will be sent a finished proof. These are also sometimes called "mock ups".
— Each hard copy proof that you request is charged at £25 and this includes delivery by 1st class mail. To be crystal clear: if you wish a second or subsequent hard copy proof, these will be charged at an additional £25.
— Hard copy proofs are normally despatched within 1 working day.
— If you do not have a credit account with us, you must pay for your hard copy proof before we print and send it to you.
— We will not print a hard copy proof if your electronic artwork fails pre-flight unless you specifically request that we do so.
— If your artwork fails pre-flight we will notify you by email. If you do not read your emails, or your spam filter blocks our emails then you will not receive our notification.
— Hard copy proof charges are non-refundable. If you wish, you can just pay for the hard copy proof and when you are happy for this, you can pay for the remainder of your order. Please call the Help Desk to arrange this. If you have paid for your entire order and you decide not to proceed to print, then we will refund your payment EXCLUDING THE HARD COPY PROOF CHARGE.

Why are booklets trimmed?

When you fold multiple sheets of paper, the inner pages "creep" out on the open end. This creep needs to be trimmed of to produce a neat job. Creep is more noticable with thicker booklets.

Delivery

IMPORTANT INFORMATION, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:-

— We include next working day delivery in these prices.
— Please bear in mind are that "working days" for the next working day delivery service is defined by the courier company as Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, excluding bank holidays.
— This is not a guaranteed next day service, though you can pay extra and order this.
— Although it's not always possible, it's a really, really good idea to build an extra day into your schedule "just in case"!

Need Very Large Quantities?

We switch to litho printing for very large quantities and you should see a cost saving with this. The cross over point where litho printing is more cost effective is around 500-1000 booklets. Take a look at the litho printed brochures & booklets page for large quantities.

What Other Types Of Binding Are Available?

"Saddle stitched" is the only realistic option for CD case booklets. We offer a wide range of other types of binding, see the link below to explore these.
info

Digital vs Litho?

Generally, it will be cheaper and quicker to print smaller quantities digitally. If you want more than about 500 items, compare the litho prices as well. Remember, litho is 5 working days to print on standard service, digital is 4. There is no difference in the quality between the two.

Need More Pages?

If you input all of your details, this page will tell you if your booklet is too thick to make.

Why Do We Trim Booklets?

When you fold multiple sheets of paper, the inner pages "creep" out on the open end. This creep needs to be trimmed of to produce a neat job. Creep is more noticable with thicker booklets.
